Album ini lahir pada 10 Oktober 1995, dan masuk peringkat ke 2 di Amerika Serikat, dan juga mendapatkan 2x platinum album di tahun 1996.

Dalam rekor penjualan, album ini berada di peringkat ke-3 setelah American Idiot dan Dookie.

Untuk masalah nama album, dulu sebelumnya mereka ingin memberi nama album tersebut “Tight Wad Hill” yang merupakan track no 13 di album tersebut, dan untuk Artwork Album (god told me to skin you alive), Winston Smith turun tangan dalam masalah pembuatannya.

Kenapa bisa Insomniac?
Setelah Album Artwork selesai pembuatannya, Winston Smith didatangin Billie Joe, dan BJ menanyakan, bagaimana artwork ini cepet selesai? Winston Smith menjawab “It’s easy for me, I am an Insomniac”.
Dan kebetulan BJ menulis lagu-lagu dalam album ini saat dia tidak bisa tidur karena selalu mendengar tangisan si Joey anaknya yang waktu itu masih bayi.
Jadilah Insomniac di pilih untuk nama album ini.
